One of the most prolific of 18th-century children’s authors was Ellenor Fenn who lived at Hill House in Dereham, Norfolk, where she devoted herself to the welfare and education of children of the poor, including the introduction of a needlework school. Lady Fenn believed that “in making amusement the vehicle of instruction consists the grand secret of early education” and made use of toys and games to imbue “learning with delight.” “Dissected” or jigsaw puzzles, first produced in England in the 1750’s became one of those delightful “vehicles of instruction”.

In honor of Ellenor Fenn and for your amusement while we finish our first stitching projects, we commissioned a jigsaw puzzle of one of our favorite Norfolk samplers, the 1768 Mary Newman sampler.

One of the things we like about jigsaw puzzles is that they offer a challenging and soothing solitary experience, much like needlework, and are also a fun and attractive multi-generational group activity. At 513 colorful pieces, the Mary Newman puzzle imparts an appreciation of the intricacies of sampler design and construction to stitchers and non-stitchers alike.

The Mary Newman puzzle measures 16 x 20 inches when assembled and is packaged in a sturdy and attractive storage box with a magnetic catch and ribbon ties, embellished with our logo on the outside, and a print of the sampler on the interior lid. Inside the box the puzzle pieces are secured in a custom drawstring bag printed with a cartouche bearing the name and date of the sampler. Also included is a full size poster of the sampler. A history of the sampler-maker will be provided with each order.

This is the first in a series of limited-edition puzzles from our extensive and varied collection of Norfolk Samplers ranging in date from 1726 to 1865. This edition is limited to 200 puzzles. Price is inclusive of domestic shipping via UPS ground within the United States. For overseas orders, please contact us for shipping options.
